A good question was asked at November’s annual Church Conference about our Mission Shares at work, and where the $ goes; so, to begin the new year, allow me to share the following brief article published by the General Council on Finance and Administration:
United Methodists do God's work through a unique connectional covenant, combining our gifts to accomplish something bigger than any one of us could do alone. Learn how your monies are helping those around the connection.
The majority of every dollar—88 cents on average—remains in the local church to support its ministries, which are the core of our connection. On average, 5 cents goes to benevolent giving, which supports those in need through disaster relief aid, emergency response and special needs. Another 5 cents is shared by districts, annual conferences and jurisdictions all working together to strengthen our connection and fund vital ministries such as new church starts and campus ministries. The remaining 2 cents supports the worldwide mission of The United Methodist Church, including education, episcopal leadership, global missions, communications, justice initiatives, discipleship ministries, f inance and other intra-church administration.
